final final final
I just finish my video. While I was editing my video, I kept thinking about differences between video art and artful video. What I reply about that question before was mass media and people’s words make differences between them. Now, I’ll say something that expresses artists thoughts and characteristics well makes things more artful.
However, artful video also has to have thoughtful consideration to audience. Sometimes artist forget about this. But I think it’s very important to think. Artists are not the ones who are going to judge their videos. Audience does. Artist needs to entertain people with their video. It can be scary. It can be boring. I don’t mean the word ’entertain’ as making people pleasant. What I mean is the video should arouse any emotion or interest.
I’m not in art major. I’ve never thought about any thing like this before. But what I learn about the artful work through taking not only this class but also several art class is expression, collaboration and harmony.

is motion graphic a part of video art?
I wondered whether music videos are video art or not. so I asked Ms. Garmon and she said I have to find that out. I also wondered whether motion graphic is a part of video art or not. So I asked Ms. Garmon again and she said I should figure that out myself. To be honestly, the reason why I signed up for this class is I wanted to learned about those two. Before I came to this class those are the all video arts I knew. I knew for music videos and motion graphics, editing does matter. So I guessed I’m going to learn about video editing programs in this class. And I was so excited about learning them. (Again it’s just what I was guessing about this class) Don’t get me wrong but on the first day, I was disappointed. We started whatching old films and avant garde video. Obviously as you can see that was not what I expected. What about music video! What about motion graphics!!!
It has been more than three month. I’m getting afraid. Because the more videos I watch, I realize how shallow my knowledge is. So I tried to watch videos and know about better. (Even though I fell a sleep sometimes.) I totally forgot about what I was wondering on the beginning of class. And this video project remind me of them. Are motion graphic and music video a part of video art? Because motion graphic and music videos are comercialized so people don’t think them as video arts anymore. But I think they are. I don’t understand people who think comercialized art is not the real art. In my opinion about them, I’ll say it’s just a rising tendency in this century. Motion graphic artists use Adobe Aftereffect a lot because they are so fascinating. I’m also one of the people who fascinated by the program. (even though I don’t know how to use it.) Artists want their videos to be attracted by people. They put a lot of effort on making them fresh and nice. So they developed really fast. They are the core of developing video art world. And there’s no reason why you put them aside and say they are not video art or artful video because they are the chosen one by the mass.

Michel Gondry
Since I was little, I always love Music video. It sends messages of songs effectively to people. Also it makes not only my ears but also my eyes excited. So I planned to make music video for my video art project. As I started, I don’t know what to start with so I visit Ms. Garmon and she rent me Michel Gondry DVD. I posted The Chemical Brother’s ( ’Star Guitar’ music video before which is one of music videos he made. I really loved it. I was impressed by his delicacy. I caught every beat and show them in video. After I came back I was so excited to watch his other video.
In his video I could see various techniques just like Man Ray’s photos. He tried to make videos in many other styles but I found some common things in them. One of them is a fake coincidence. His fantastic editing skill made everything happened in same time or flow and in actual it’s not. It seems like a well-planned blue print. I was his fan. I liked chemical brother’s video as I mentioned and I liked his movie ‘Eternal Sunshine’. Honestly those are all I watched before I watched this DVD. Now I’m a HUGE fan of him. I wish I can make my video like his.

Andy Warhol & Reality Show
There’s two reasons why I like reality show. First is whenever they fight I can see what people who fought or are around think about each other or them. Second, I feel like I saw their real face(?) and know better about them like friends(maybe;;). So, after I watch I kind of like them later. I’ll say ‘Making the Band’ or ‘The Diary of XXX’ series(long time ago shows) are the ones of them.
Andy Warhol Is like a American rock star to me. he knows how to be popular. People like things that are used to them better(Objects he used for his works pretty familiar to everyone I guess). People like to see what other people (or celebrities) do. Sometimes it looks like a stalker though. I think he used those people’s instincts. He taped what he does cool stuffs in private space and published with editing (makes it look better). So people who saw the video can be fascinated by him and the way he lives. They start to admire him after all.
That’s what I could see on ‘American Next Top Model’ and ‘Making the Band’. The people who were chosen by judges weren’t that good looking nor that talented. But people watched them on show a lot. They got familiar to them. They know how hard to them to get in and other stories behind (like private things like family stories and love stories). Later on we (at least I) cheer them as a friend or fan. Just like what we did with Andy.
To me those are what broadcasting system got ideas from and what Andy did. Even though nowadays reality shows don’t have reality anymore

Andy Warhol and ‘Interview’
Andy Warhol, this greedy and meddlesome person even had his own magazine, too. Maybe he wanted to use his skills to anything related. As we saw on the video that we watched in the class, he seems that he looks cynical and doesn’t care about anything. But when you see these magazines, you’ll see how a meddling guy he is. He just like to talk about everything what happens in the world and he tried to show everything naturally itself. He said that the best way to do an interview was to visit the subject, ideally in their own home, with no questions and no preconceptions and revealing image of the subject via the topics he or she chooses to discuss. He used the term ‘voice portrait’ which catches everything coming out of interviewee’s mouth even ‘umm’ and ‘hmm’. This magazine just get one over with any other magazines. It was more fashionable than fashion magazine like ‘vogue’. It also dealt more natural with people’s personal stories than any other magazine. So ‘Newsweek’ noted that ‘Interview’ magazine had give birth to ‘People’, among others, and Warhol has inspired at least one hundred books in the last thirty years. His finer instinct influenced on not only the way looking in to celebrities’ gossip and fashion but also news, social and so on. Maybe he tried to show off his talent. Maybe he wanted to communicate with people. But my thought, he really tried to show what is going on now with his distinctive view.

Nam-jun Paik
About Nam-jun Paik, I’ll say a talented man with the good fortune to have helpful people. When he was born, everyone was poor because Korea was Japanese colony that time. However, he wasn’t. His father had the biggest fabric company in Korea. So, he was wealthy enough to go middle and high school. When every korean struggling with korean war he had a fortune to escape and study in Japan. Just like that, artist never comes out with himself but he had really great supports from the beginning. It didn’t finish on here. He met influencing people in German and America. Maybe he tried hard to know these people but they were also right place in right time. Meeting Moorman was also special. She was looking for someone who could do strange things for her performance. And her friends said Nam-jun is the one. That’s how they got started working together. Two weirdos started to gather people into their world.
When artists make their works, they usually cares about their emotions only. That’s what I hate about Maya Daren and what I like about Nam-jun, he cared about his audience, too. He tried to arouse people’s sympathy, entertain them with his works and make newer whenever he came out with his art so, people don’t get bored with his works. I like his last piece. I had a chance to see that. It’s about ‘Mom’ which is everlasting shelter to me. His wife said he missed his family and Korea. A monitor was covered with Korean traditional clothes and on the monitor children kept calling “Mom”. I was standing in front of his work and I started missing my mom even though I saw her in the morning. I was surprised. Even though he died, I still could communicate with him.
He said once “Half of art is fraud. It’s all about faking and faked. Art is one of the high-graded fraud. Making people dazed is the art.” I agree with that and that’s why art is so fascinating. Fascinating art never dies in our memories. Also his works are. It looks like I am faked by him. (^-^)

Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Flash video.
It was made in 2002
Everything that you see matches up with the music.
Michel Gondry, the director of this video and the movie, Eternal sunshine, took while she was traveling.
He had to take train 10 times everyday to make this video.
I was surprised by his delicacy. He catches every single beat.
Thanks….kkk-_-;;
